Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL)

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL). in fully accredited educational institution funded by the provincial government. It employs a variety of Distance Learning and innovative open-learning methods to provide wide access to its university courses.

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL). has its origins in the Open Learning Institute (OLI). It was founded in 1987 with a mandate to improve access to post-secondary education in non-metropolitan areas. In 1988 OLI combined with BC's educational television broadcaster, the Knowledge Network, to form the Open Learning Agency.

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning delivers courses and bachelor and associate degree programs in a variety of disciplines in arts, sciences, administration and technology. It offers courses and programs at three levels: adult basic education, college, and university. Agreements with more than a dozen BC universities, colleges and institutes allow students to transfer credits toward an Open Learning degree as well as to other universities. It delivers 200 distance courses of its own. Its consortium partners, Simon Fraser University (SFU), the University of British Columbia and and the University of Victoria (UVic), deliver additional courses and programs in co-operation with other educational institutions, professional associations, workplaces and community organizations.

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL). courses use a wide range of print, video and audio media as well as computer technology in their delivery of subject material to students at off-site locations. Some courses also use television programs broadcast on the Knowledge Network to support and supplement course material. Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL). is a leader in the use of computer conferencing in the delivery of education, and many of its courses are available online. This allows students around the province to receive tutoring online and to participate in discussions and debates.
