Historic Over Lynn Mansion is a rare heritage building in the City of Burnaby. The Mansion is one of the first houses built in Burnaby Heights, and is one of the best preserved heritage homes in the province.
Samuel Maclure, one of BC's most prominent early architects designed the house in the English Arts and Crafts style. The mansion was completed in 1912 as the family home for Charles Peter. Over Lynn was built at a cost of $75,000 in Tudor Revival design.
Its owner Mr. Charles Peter came to Canada at 15 years old from Scotland. He was manager of a tea import firm, G. F. & G. Gait Company, importers of Ceylon teas, packers of Blue Ribbon and Monsoon Teas. He was married and had 5 children. He retired in 1936. After his wife died in Aberdeen, Scotland he lived in Ellensburg, Washington until his death.
The house is constructed of stone and wood, and was named "Over Lynn for its commanding views of Lynn Valley and Burrard inlet. During various periods, the mansion was used for purposes other than the original residential use, and certain changes were made to the building. The original building had a large conservatory on the south end that was glassed in. The third floor had four dormers which were removed over the years.
Over Lynn was sold to the Sisters of Charity (Halifax) in 1930. They ran a convent and boarding and day school for girls. They replaced the conservatory with a chapel which is timbered in Gothic Revival Style. In 1970 the Sisters of Charity sold the home.
